5 Tips for picking out your wedding dress!

Ok ok, this may sound like a no brainer, but if it was I wouldn’t be blogging about it!

Believe it or not, there are so many brides that don’t try on their dress outside of the bridal shop they buy it from, and truthfully, I have seen my fair share of uncomfortable brides on their wedding day in their dress because of this!

My goal is to teach you from mistakes I have seen made, and even MY OWN!!!! You’re probably like, “Sam, WHAT?” haha Way back when I got married almost 9 years ago ( i should share that story one day, because it’s a lengthy one lol I always tell my brides when things get crazy on their wedding day, a little snippet of how bad mine went, and it makes them feel so much better :) haha! it truly was a mini disaster that ended with the best gift of being able to marry my husband though! ) I bought my dress from amazon, and it had to be altered SO much because i just didnt love the way it fit!

For funsies….ill share the lowest quality picture possible of us on our wedding day, because it was literally the only photo we got :( lol I was about 7 months pregnant with our youngest, Paxton, and mason was about to be 2!

I share that…to share this! It all starts with how confident you feel in your dress, on your wedding day! Which goes back to…..THE BRIDAL SHOP you try it on at! If anyone asks me, i never recommend buying your wedding dress online! You need to be able to try it on before you buy it! Every bride needs to feel 100% confident and COMFORTABLE in their wedding dress, so this is to educate all the brides to be out there to be open to ALL dress options!

SO, here are my top 5 biggest tips when picking out your wedding dress!

  1. Sit down in it before you buy it! This might sound dumb but it’s actually a REAL thing! I have seen time and time again brides struggling to sit down because of how tight their dress is! When you’re trying it on you usually don’t think of what it feels like to sit down, but if you would like to sit down to eat dinner and be able to BREATHE, this is important!

  2. Make sure you love the way your arms look in it!!!! My goodness, why do I feel this is such a taboo subject? lol But it’s definitely one that needs to be said and addressed before hand because it’s SO important! I can’t tell you how many brides I have had this conversation with during portrait time during an engagement session or wedding day of…..” can you please just look out for my arm fat because I don’t like my arms”. LADIES, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!! But, if you feel you are subconscious about your arms, make sure you buy a dress you LOVE your arms in no matter how you move! You will feel so much more confident and let’s be real…. CONFIDENCE is your best accessory on your wedding day!

  3. SWEAT = STRETCH! When you are getting your dress fitted, it should fit perfectly! However, you have to realize that if you are having a middle of the summer wedding, or dancing the night away, you WILL be sweating at some point! If this happens, you want to make sure you’re not sweating and holding your dress up to dance at the same time! You need to be having fun!!!

  4. Be aware of your body type! I feel like I should preface this by saying, there is NO wrong type of body!! But we are all shaped differently, and so are dresses!! Make sure you are picking one that you see fits all of your curves comfortably! Usually, strapless dresses are better for smaller and higher chests! Thats not always true though! If you notice that you have a lower chest (there is a bigger gap in between your shoulders and your bust) then maybe picking a dress that connects it better like with straps or sleeves would be more flattering for your body type!

  5. Pick a dress that fits YOUR style! Overall, comfort is QUEEN on your wedding day! You are going to have these images forever and ever amen, so when you are picking out your dress make sure that you are picking one that YOU ultimately love most. Not mom or sister….YOU!! Don’t be that bride that doesn’t love the way you look on your wedding day because you chose a dress that your mom loved on you most! I think you should definitely take others opinions into consideration when narrowing down your options, just make sure the final say, is yours :)
